This is so well said, Lara. I can't remember if I've commented about this before, but I am not getting your newsletters anymore even though I'm subscribed (and I'm still getting all of my other Substack subscriptions just fine). Don't be alarmed, but I am going to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to see if there is something wonky in my settings. I'm just quite sad I've missed so many of your gems!

I agree with your assessment one hundred percent. We left a church last year because of false teachings (one too many red flags ignored, year after year, culminating in horrific teaching on mute and deaf children and adults being potentially possessed by demons). Since then, I've found comfort in some of the "heresy hunter" YouTube channels as I've grappled with what happened and the great exodus that followed (a staff pastor was fired, even, for defending our family). As I've continued to consume those, however, I've realized that those aren't great for my soul, either. This entire past year, we've endeavored (with little success) to find a church with solid teaching as well as a church where our non-speaking autistic son is safe, comfortable, and, well, welcome! It has been a hard year but we had a good experience visiting a church yesterday. I have a newsletter coming out in January about our church search.

After a very difficult year, I finally have a little hope for the future. And some of that, to your point, involves setting aside some tertiary issues I do have with the church we visited—and finding hope in the generous support they offer for families of children with special needs. But: I absolutely need to be aligned with a church on primary issues. On truth. From what I can tell, we're in good shape on that front so far. I'm hopeful we can attend a class in January that will illuminate more for us.
