I have LONG resonated with that Lewis quote; doubting not his existence but his character is, I think, for the true believer, the true danger when walking through deep suffering. Anyway, tell me if I’m reading this correctly: It seems to me that Lewis’ example with Shasta is the same truth that you crumpled and rejected in the first few paragraphs—that God is near even when he seems like he is not—but putting it into story makes it more palatable, helps it go down.
